Dr. Paolo Ferroli is the Director of the Neurovascular Division of the Department of Neurosurgery of the Neurological Institute Carlo Besta in Milan. The Neurological Institute Carlo Besta is a tertiary referral center for research and treatment. His traditional committment dates back to 1918 and combines basic scientific research with diagnosis and treatment of the most important neurological and neurosurgical diseases. Dr. Ferroli’s interest has always been focusing on the most complex surgery of the brain and the spinal cord and, in particular, on the surgical technical aspects that may contribute to minimizing complications and sequelae.
A dedicated special register of the neurosurgical activity of his division was created in 2011. The retrospective analisis of these data allowed for the identification of major outcome predictors (Big Five) and the creation of a complexity score (Milan Complexity Scale) with a predictive value regarding the chances of worsening of patients’ neurological conditions after surgery (Data published on Neurosurgical Focus in December 2015).
His main fields of interest include:
- Aneurysms, vascular brain and spinal cord malformations, neurovascular conflicts (trigeminal neuralgia or hemifacial spasm), cavernous malformations.
Complex brain tumors in peculiar areas (deep brain areas with critical neurovascular relationships)
Pedriatic tumors of great complexity (sellar and parasellar region, diencephalic region, brainstem, posterior fossa and eloquent brain parenchima)
Tumors requiring awake brain surgery
Tumors requiring mininvasive endoscopic treatment
National and International specialized magazines have published over one hundred articles by Dr. Ferroli and, together with his team, about 10 scientific articles a year.
He is “peer-reviewer” for the best specialistic national and international publications (Journal of Neurological Science, Journal of Neurosurgical Science, World Neurosurgery, Neurosurgery, Neurosurgical Review, Acta Neurochirurgica, etc). He regulary takes part in the most important scientific national and intrnational meetings and is memeber of several scientific associations.
He is a regular professor at Milano Università degli studi.
